Why we made GarageEye

November 23, 2023

My parents wanted a simple way to know if their garage door was closed before going to bed, without having to walk over and check every night. We looked for existing products on the market, and discovered a few things:

  1. Most of the devices required a cloud setup and corresponding App, or some kind of integration with a Smart Home/Assistant. We actually already even had a camera in the garage which looks at the door, but it was not convenient to have to find a phone and pull up the video to check on the door. We needed something simpler and ambient.
  2. We found a few devices which were offline like GarageEye, but they all had significant design flaws which led to unreliable indication. These devices had sensors which would only transmit an alert to the receiver when the garage door was moving, or when it was in the open state; this meant that it was possible for the indicator to show that the garage was closed when in fact it was open! Either due to a missed transmission or due to a dead battery in the sensor. Many of these devices are extremely expensive as well (due to being discontinued and low inventory, or just because of market dominance).

GarageEye solves the reliability problem by constantly transmitting the door state no matter what and also shows you the signal strength of the connection along with the battery health at all times. This kind of operation is a market first, especially on standard AA batteries with a 1-year operation span. Our competitors use hard to find lithium batteries or do not have as long of a battery life (with less features!). This is made possible by a special low-power, long-range radio technology called LoRA. This also means that you can expect a much further working distance between the sensor and the indicator.

Simply put, we had high standards for how this type of device should operate and could not find anything that existed on the market, so we built it! We are proud to offer the device for you to purchase and experience the ambient peace of mind yourself. If you are not happy for any reason, please reach out and we promise to make things right!
